Fall Adventure: Cape Cod by Land or by Sea

Fall weather is perfect for exploring Cape Cod by land or by sea!  Wonderful weather for a fall hike, bike, drive or paddle adventure on the Cape. Without the crowds. Here’s some resources to help you plan your fall adventure on Cape Cod.

Cyclists on Cape Cod Rail Trail

1. Bike Cape Cod

Miles and miles of mostly flat, paved, bike paths, wooded mountain bike trails and beautiful scenic byways are calling your name. In the fall, you’ll have them mostly to yourself. Bring your bike, or rent them close by, and get ready to soak in the crisp fall air, sweet sea breeze and Cape Cod’s natural beauty.

Our favorites are the Cape Cod Rail Trail which runs which 25 miles from Dennis to Wellfleet and the 7-mile path that runs along both sides of the Cape Cod Canal.

2. Hike Cape Cod

Fall on the Cape treats hikers to stunning views of the deep blue ocean, golden-hued salt marshes, and scarlet-drenched cranberry bogs.

We recommend the Great Island Trail, a 9-mile roundtrip trek that takes you along the Cape Cod National Seashore. Sandy trails. Spectacular views. Salt marshes. There’s no better way to experience the Cape in all her wild glory.

Or, for an immersive hike among the pines, we recommend exploring the 1,900 wooded acres and crystal-clear glacial kettle ponds at Nickerson State Park.

3. Cape Cod Road Trip Adventure Anyone?

Spend the perfect fall day driving along the Cape’s Old King’s Highway (historic Route 6A), now designated as a National Scenic Byway. White-steepled churches. Antiques. Eclectic shops. Quaint villages. Trendy restaurants. Route 6A has them all! Here’s a sampling of our favorite attractions along the way.

4. Put In and Paddle Cape Cod

Cape Cod’s pristine waters and vibrant autumn hues create the perfect combination for a fall kayak adventure. It’s hard to pick our favorite spot. We recommend checking out the ospreys and oyster catchers along the glacial bluffs of Great Island. Observing gray seals, gulls, and shorebirds on Nauset Marsh. Or paddling over eel grass teeming with crabs and mollusks on Upper Pleasant Bay!
